Nomex is a fire-resistant fiber material developed by DuPont, its full name being Poly-m-phenylene isophthalamide (Aramid in English). Nomex material has the following characteristics, which give it excellent fire-resistant properties:

  • High Strength and High Modulus: Nomex fibers have high tensile strength and rigidity, allowing them to maintain structural stability at high temperatures.

  • High Temperature Resistance: Nomex can remain intact and not melt or decompose at temperatures up to 260°C (about 500°F).

  • Permanent Flame Retardancy: Nomex material inherently possesses permanent flame-resistant properties, which do not diminish even with abrasion or washing.

The fire-resistant principles of Nomex clothing are mainly achieved through the following aspects:

  • Insulating Barrier: Nomex fibers form an insulating barrier in high-temperature environments, preventing heat from being transmitted to the wearer's skin.

  • Burn Suppression: Nomex material does not burn at high temperatures but instead forms a protective char layer on the surface, preventing flames from spreading further.

  • Thermal Decomposition: At extreme high temperatures, Nomex fibers undergo thermal decomposition, releasing gases that help to lower the temperature and heat of the flames.

These properties make Nomex fire-resistant clothing widely used in high-risk environments such as firefighters, industrial workers, and electrical workers, providing them with effective protection.

The main difference between FR (flame-resistant) and non-FR clothing is their ability to resist flames and thermal hazards. FR clothing is designed to self-extinguish when exposed to flames, preventing or limiting burn injuries. On the other hand, non-FR ... Clik for More
