Arc Flash Clothing Applications by Protection Level

Arc Flash Clothing Applications by Protection Level

Arc flash clothing can be applied to different work environments depending on its Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV/EBT, cal/cm²). The higher the rating, the higher the protection level against heat, impact, and molten metal splatter.

1. Low-Level Protection (8–12 cal/cm²)

Applicable Scenarios:

  • Low-voltage distribution operations: drawer-type switchgear inspections, busbar maintenance

  • UPS / battery DC circuit maintenance

  • Light inspections and infrared thermography

Features:

  • Protects against low-energy arc flashes, preventing minor burns and local splatter

  • Lightweight and flexible, suitable for routine inspections and mobility

2. Medium-Level Protection (12–25 cal/cm²)

Applicable Scenarios:

  • Low-voltage live operations: switch closing/opening, busbar maintenance

  • Small substations or ring main unit (RMU) operations

  • Localized short circuits or arc faults inside electrical cabinets

Features:

  • Expanded coverage for chest, abdomen, and arms

  • Face shield or hood + face shield combination for enhanced heat and splatter protection

  • Suitable for longer-duration close-proximity tasks

3. High-Level Protection (25–40 cal/cm²)

Applicable Scenarios:

  • Medium-voltage switchgear operations (6–10 kV)

  • Medium-voltage distribution cabinet / metal-clad switchgear maintenance

  • Urban rail or metro power supply line maintenance

  • Partial live operations in PV combiner boxes and energy storage systems

Features:

  • Full arc flash suit + hood/face shield + gloves

  • Can withstand higher instantaneous arc thermal energy

  • Ensures safety in confined spaces

4. Ultra-High-Level Protection (40–65 cal/cm² and above)

Applicable Scenarios:

  • High-voltage substation live-side operations (>10 kV)

  • Emergency repairs and busbar short-circuit handling on transmission lines

  • Industrial high-voltage equipment fault response

  • Wind turbine high-voltage inverters and energy storage battery compartment operations

Features:

  • Full-body coverage with focus on head, chest, back, arms, and legs

  • Equipped with face shield, gloves, balaclava, and insulating boots

  • Can handle high-energy arc flashes and molten metal splatter

Summary

Arc flash clothing levels should be selected based on arc energy (cal/cm²), operating voltage, task type, and space constraints:

  • Low level → inspections, light-duty tasks

  • Medium level → routine operations and energized maintenance

  • High level → medium-voltage maintenance, rail transit, and renewable energy operations

  • Ultra-high level → high-voltage emergency repair, fault response, extreme environments

Selection Principle: Conduct a risk assessment first, then match the arc flash protection level. Ensure full coverage of critical body areas while maintaining comfort and flexibility.
