Build a Strong Safety Barrier by Wearing Properly
In power operation and maintenance, arc flash hazards are ever-present. Wearing arc-rated protective clothing (Arc Flash PPE) properly is not only a fundamental safety requirement but also a critical step in protecting lives. To ensure personnel are fully protected during high-voltage short circuits or arc explosions, the following guidelines outline the correct practices for wearing arc flash clothing in power maintenance scenarios:
Check the fabric for integrity: no tears, burns, or severe discoloration.
Verify the arc rating label: make sure the clothing meets the required protection level (e.g., 8 cal/cm², 25 cal/cm², or higher).
Clean and dry: arc flash clothing must be dry, as moisture can reduce insulation effectiveness.
Full body coverage: the clothing should cover the torso, arms, and legs completely, with no exposed skin.
Flame-resistant base layer: wearing FR undergarments is recommended to enhance overall protection.
Fully fastened: ensure zippers and velcro closures are securely closed to prevent arc intrusion.
No rolled sleeves or pant legs: rolling them up exposes skin and increases burn risk.
Arc-rated hood or face shield: protects face and eyes from heat and flying debris.
Flame-resistant insulated gloves: wear compliant insulating gloves with arc-rated outer layers.
Arc-rated safety boots: use boots that offer insulation, flame resistance, and puncture protection.
Hearing protection: use as needed to mitigate noise from arc blasts.
Conduct regular training on proper wearing and use of arc flash clothing.
Establish daily inspection and supervision mechanisms to prevent improper wearing.
Non-compliance should result in reminders, corrections, or suspension from work.
GB/T 1335 / GB 8965.1: Flame-resistant clothing technical standards
NFPA 70E: Electrical safety standard from the United States
ASTM F1506 / F2621: Performance testing and evaluation standards for arc flash clothing
DL/T 320-2019: Chinese standard for personal arc flash protective equipment
Arc flash clothing is not ordinary workwear — it is a vital barrier in high-risk operations. Proper wearing and scientific usage are responsibilities every power maintenance worker must uphold. Standardized protection ensures safe returns from every operation.
